A popular sampler - back in the days when hardware samplers were popular, that is.
The S-series was popular with especially the film composers. Typically film composers had stacks of S-samplers, each dedicated to a particular instrument of the orchestra.
Additionally, the popularity of this series came from its excellent library (the core samples went on to form the ROM in the JV-series of synthesizers), and a slew of 3rd party houses - notably Eric Persing's Spectrasonics with "Distorted Reality", a native S-series library - produced excellent add-on sample CD-ROMs for these samplers.
